After the previous night's storm, a warm sunny morning greeted the riders with a moderate breeze. Although riding into a head wind, the lower half of the Steyning Bostal course was sheltered. Unfortunately, I was the only club rider entered, so took the club Hillclimb championship with a time of 05.04.80 minutes (course PB as this was my first time riding the Steyning course). That was good enough for 12th overall and a win in my age category. Overall winner was Gabe Dellar (SUCC) who defended his title from last year with a very rapid time of 04.13.80 minutes. Lewes Wanderers took the team prize as the only club that had three riders finished. Hopefully next year the club can get at least three riders entering too.

EVENT : Road Bike - Solo |
Karl had convinced Cheesy to do the St.Raphael Goodwood Hilly event as a 2 up TT. Having recce'd the course a few weeks ago both decided that road bikes were the way to go due to a few of the turns and narrow descents. Also in attendance was an unknown rider to both Cheesy and Karl in the road bike category from WECC, Chris Brooks. With 2100 feet of climbing in just under 27 miles it would be a tough event but provided we all finished a course PB's all round were in the offing as Karl & Cheesy hadn't ridden the 2 up event and I'm certain that Chris hasn't ridden the event before.
Cheesy and Karl posted a 1.18.57 and placed third of the 2 up event (albeit only 4 pairs had entered and the first pair suffered a mechanical at about 2 miles but happy with the £25 NoPinz voucher each!!). Chris posted a 1.23.53 in the road bike category.
In the words of Sir Steve Redgrave Cheesy's sentiments, having clearly been the weaker of the pairing, are "If you see me entered in this event again - Shoot me!!".

Cheesy's time of 58:44 was the best of his three times for the distance this season. The winner wasn't a massive surprise in Simon McNamara with a 51.31, which is even more impressive given he's been out in Colorado competing in the Steamboat gravel race - Is there anything that man cant do well at on a bike?!!

SHORTENED EVENT (13.5 Miles) |
Riders arrived at HQ to sign on for the SCA 30 Mile (incorporating the WECC 30 Mile competition) to a breezy and cooler morning than of late. Cheesy was keen to defend his 2021 title. Colin Toppin was a DNS but also present was Rick Hughes. It then became clear that the course couldn't be ridden due to a lane closure on the A24 between Dial Post and Ashington meaning the entire Ashurst to Washington Loop couldn't be ridden. As a result the 30 mile event became a 13.6 mile event.
Cheesy posted a 31.47 with Rick Hughes posting a 33.52 and the overall event was won, unsurprisingly, by Chris McNamara with a time of 26.50. A good ride but this means that there will be no 30 Mile Champion for 2022. It also means that there are no points awarded in the ongoing Points Competitions.

Only 15 entries minus 4 DNS’s, and then 4DNF’s. WECC had Clive Patterson-Lett and Colin Toppin head to the start line.
Unfortunately Clive was put off the road by a car in the latter stages of the event and crashed out; the car then failing to stop - fortunately Clive wasnt too bad…landing on the grass verge rather than tarmac, and was ‘walking wounded’ but in good spirits at the HQ afterwards, but his crash hat thankfully did it’s job.
Colin in his first ever 100 was going ok before cramp set in at about 80 miles, but survived the final stages to the finish to record 4:48:37, and as the club’s only finisher takes the WECC 100 title.
The event was won by Paceline RT’s Pat Wright in a very rapid 3:44:30

Whilst pleased, both were a little frustrated as they lost time due to Karl shipping his chain at about 19 miles meaning a complete stop, re-fitting the chain and then getting back in to their stride again, but that's bike racing for you.

The event was won by Cris Coxon (Brighton Mitre) with a 1.49.06. Cheesy posted a 1.59.24, a course PB by nearly 3 minutes and placed 9th.Clive posted a 2.11.46, another PB by over 2 minutes and placed 18th.
Cheesy will be unable to defend his 2021 WECC 50 mile title as he is away but is hoping to get a ride in the ...a3crg 50 mile event to be held in early July.

The event was won by Pat Wright (Paceline), followed by Mark Smith(Crawley Wheelers) with Paul Tippet (Crawley Wheelers) rounding out the podium. Cheesy did a 2.02.22 and placed 4th (albeit there were only 11 finishers) and was pretty pleased especially as only 2 riders went under 2 hours. As Cheesy will be away for the SCA/WECC 50 that elusive sub 2 hour ride on this lumpy course will have to be postponed until 2023!!

Two WECC pairs lined up for the SCA 2-up race around the Partridge Green loop course on a spring morning with a light breeze and reasonable temperatures, in the form of Rick Hughes/Karl Roberton and Cheesy/Colin Toppin. It seemed like a good omen as a cuckoo was heard just as Cheesy and Colin took the start line. The event was won, unsurprisingly, by Chris and Simon McNamara with an incredible time of 56.53 and a new course record by 3 minutes!
The size of the field was significantly down on previous years and with the rules indicating that only teams of the same club qualify for prizes this meant WECC taking first and second team prizes at the event for TT bikes. 2nd place was Karl and Rick with a 1.09.33 and Cheesy and Colin taking 1st with a 1.07.33.

A lone WECC rider in the form of a short bearded retired police officer had entered the Charlotteville 50 mile event on the Bentley course. A brisk NNE wind was in attendance but they had resurfaced the bottom end of the course which was long overdue and prevented the TT bike dismantling itself!! Cheesy posted a time of 1.57.45 which he was was really pleased with given this is a course PB by 3 minutes and 20 seconds and provisional placing was 17th. The winner of the event did a 1.43.

A very breezy north-easterly was on offer for the events 43 entrants. Neil Harris (Southborough & District Wheelers) didn’t seem too impacted though by the tough northbound return leg of the grippy A22 course, clocking a winning 51:40. Just Colin T from WECC, recording 20th place with 59:08.
