John McGrath won the final event in the Worthing Excelsior Evening Hill Climb Series at Washington bostal on Thursday and so retained the series title that he won last year. He finished ahead of Dom Maxwell, Simon Steeles and Rick Hughes.
In Sunday’s Southdown Velo 25 mile time trial at Fontwell McGrath continued his fine week by recording a 54:41. This is more than three minutes quicker than he has ever done before at this distance and he finished in tenth place overall. John’s wife Karen also produced a record ride. Her 1:03:24 comprehensively beat her exisiting Excelsior ladies club record of 1:06:46. This season she has set new records at 10, 15, 25 and 30 miles. Ian Cheesman also rode and just beat the hour mark with a 59:12. In the Sussex CA Sporting 10 which is held on a hilly course at Loxwood Nik Allen finished tenth overall with a fine 23:16 ahead of Ian Cheesman’s 25:10. This event is a qualifier for the 2019 Excelsior Sporting Courses Series and Nik’s points gained as best placed Excelsior rider puts him into an unassailable lead in the competition with just one race remaining. Cheesman (1:03:23) was the only Excelsior rider in the Sussex CA Sporting 25. Paul Townsley made the long trip to Cheshire for the LVRC National veterans’ road race championships held over a 54 mile course. It was his first exposure at this level and he was delighted to win a silver medal for second place in his over 70 age category. He is in a rich vein of form having been promoted to British Cycling cat 3 status only last week. Photo of Paul Townsley (on the left) with medal attached. |
