Early on Sunday 8th September 2024 Cheesy travelled over to East Sussex to ride the Second ESCA 25 Mile TT of 2024to represent the club. Temperature was hovering around 20 degrees with light winds and a few showers. The event was on a revised course, G25/80, with some minor alterations from the usual G25/89 course. The roads were wet following the rain beforehand and the road surface as “grippy” to say the least which may explain why only 4 riders broke the hour. This is only Cheesy’s 2nd event after 6 weeks off the bike so pretty pleased to have secured 6th place and a course PB by virtue of it being a new course. The event was won by Adam Rogers (Eastbourne Rovers) with a time of 56.47.

On Saturday 29th June 2024 both Karl and Cheesy travelled up the
country to Cambridgeshire to race the Finsbury park 50
event which was unusually on a Saturday afternoon but a simple repeated out and
back dual carriageway course. Weather conditions were good with it being fairly
hot with a moderate WSW breeze. Like most of the F2 courses this is a fairly
quick course with little elevation to speak of. Neither riders
had an ideal ride with Karl cramping after 7 miles and Cheesy being baulked by
traffic at the lower roundabout turn twice out of four passes. That said, both
riders posted good times with Karl recording a PB for the distance and Cheesy
recording his second fastest ever 50. The event was eventually won by Hennick Persson (FTP Race Team) with a time of 1.39.40.

2nd June 2024 saw just one WECC rider taking to the start line of
the A3crg “Nifty Fifty” 50 Miles TT on the A3 course. Usually a fast course but
with a headwind on both northbound legs and being quite chilly for the first 45
minutes it was hard going. Cheesy was hoping for a faster time but given the conditions
coupled with an “undercarriage” injury making sitting on the saddle very
painful, Cheesy was pleased to beat the 2 hour mark. By virtue of being the
only WECC rider to have ridden a 50 so far this year it also means that Cheesy
is in pole position for the Fastest 50 of 2024 (Well until Karl does one
anyway!!).

The late May Bank Holiday Sunday was the date for the Hounslow & District
Wheelers 100 mile TT on the A31 Bentley course.
Effectively five laps of the same course. The Weather was mixed with rain for
the first 45 minutes and a cross headwind going westbound. Cheesy was the only
WECC rider entered. Cheesy posted a reasonable time which was a distance PB by
nearly 7 minutes. The event was won by Jake Sargent (Team Bottrill)
with a 3.25.48.
Karl had entered a 25 Mile TT on the fast Cambridge course and travelled there and back. Sadly, after the risk assessment had been completed some pop-up roadworks appeared on the course just before the race was about to start so it had to cancelled.
Sussex Cyclists’ Association 12th May 2024 Early on the morning of Sunday 12th May Karl and Cheesy took to the start line of the SCA 2-up time trial on a shortened and amended course pretty much starting slightly further north and riding the SCA 25 course to avoid the running water on the course with hidden potholes. This year there were only six pairs entered so this may be the last time the event actually runs so even more important to try to defend their 1st place (TT Bikes) from 2023 and retire at the top!! Weather was pretty much perfect with almost no wind, nice temperature and dry. The ride, however, was anything but straightforward. As planned, Karl took longer turns being the strongest rider of the duo. All was going well until Washington roundabout when a miscommunication meant Karl broke heavily (entirely Cheesy’s fault as he shouted to go but Karl though he meant stop) so with some very nimble bike handling and furious braking Cheesy avoided crashing in to the back of Karl’s bike. With crisis averted both got back into their rhythm and were going very well. At the Bramber roundabout a car pulled out from the left in front of them so more braking and then got stuck behind a string of cars behind a tractor. Thankfully both managed to pass all, including the tractors without incident. Having got to the turn pace was really good and a push for home so Cheesy took the front and accelerated back up to speed only to discover Karl wasn’t behind him. Karl had accelerated but hit a pothole at the same time and the combination led to him shipping his chain, and cutting his hand whilst putting it back on. Once back together they powered to the finish with Karl having to stay at the front for the last two miles as Cheesy could just about hang on to his wheel. Despite the less than perfect “luck” they posted a 54.41 at the finish. This was good enough to retain their 1st Place in the TT bike category from 2023, 2nd place overall and winners of the “Best turned out pair!!” Karl and Cheesy estimate that they lost about 45 seconds in total due to the incidents but in fairness to the overall winners, Ross Greening and Matt Phipps-Taylor (Paceline) RT, there was no way Cheesy and Karl would have been anywhere near their time of 52.30 so Chapeau to them.

Early on the morning of Saturday 4th May 2024 two WECC riders took to the start line of the SCA 10 Mile time trial. Cheesy on his TT rig and Colin Toppin on a Road bike. Whilst a little chilly, winds were light and the early fog had cleared. Both had an OK ride but both a little disappointed with their times, albeit it didn’t appear to be a fast morning for mere mortals. The event as won by Andy Critchlow (Team Ohten) with an amazing 19.13.

Early on Sunday 21st April 2024 Karl and Cheesy travelled over to Est Sussex to ride the ESCA 25 Mile TT to represent the club. Temperature was hovering around 4 degrees with a pretty strong and blustery northerly wind, albeit the sun was out! The ride to the turn was straightforward enough with a few side gusts just to keep riders awake but the return leg was brutal and most riders got hit by gusts pushing them into the road and holding on for dear life. Despite not ideal conditions both Karl and Cheesy were happy with their rides as they both set course PB’s by 2 minutes and 29 seconds and 1 minute and 52 seconds respectively.
The event was won by Jacob Storey (Trainsharp) with a 52.05.

Easter Monday 2024 saw just one WECC rider in open events, Brighton Mitre Hilly
TT, being Cheesy’s third race in four days – Nutter! Dry
conditions with a moderate breeze on a very undulating course with what is effectively a hill climb after 27 miles – Cruel!! Cheesy’s legs were feeling very heavy but he was pleased
with his ride, especially as he managed to keep him minute man behind him until
the finish, but tomorrow will definitely be a rest dayThe
event was won by Timothy Torrie of Trainsharp with an
incredible time of 1.01.11.

Easter Sunday 2024 saw just one WECC rider in open events, A3crg 25 Mile event
on the A3. Dry conditions with a moderate ENE wind meant that the northbound
legs were hard going. Cheesy was pleased with his ride and caught most of the
13 riders in front of him and managed to push along pretty strongly despite Fridays race still being in the legs. Whilst dry the
temperature was hovering around 4 degrees so still fresh. The event was won by
Jamie Whitcher (Bournemouth Cycleworks)
with an incredible time of 49.13.

Good Friday 2024 saw just one WECC rider in open events, the Crawley Wheelers
Sporting TT (41.60 Miles). Despite warming up in the dry, it was clear that the
roads were wet, the wind was blowing at around 20 mph and temperature was in
single figures. Cheesy took to the start line and soon afterwards the rain
came, gusts from the side and the first third of the course was pretty much in
to a headwind and many described the conditions as “Biblical!” Cheesy
persevered and got into a rhythm but the conditions meant that by three quarter
distance his hands and feet had lost all feeling making gear changing and braking a challenge. Despite getting back to the car
shivering uncontrollably and having to get the race winner, Kris Coxen, to undo his helmet strap Cheesy was pleased with his
ride and placed in the top third of the 49 finishers.
