SPORTIVE RIDE HAMPSHIRE HILLY HUNDRED - Sunday 8th May 2016
In May our club president Robert Downham took part in a challenging sportive ride.
Details of the event.
Report from Robert.
I decided to ride the Hampshire Hilly Hundred again this year as enjoyed last year’s ride, and as the name suggests there are some hills involved, but a really great route around the Hampshire countryside though some lovely villages like Cheriton.
The route started from Sparsholt College near Winchester before setting of in a westerly direction and then looping round in an anti-clockwise direction down towards Meonstoke for the first feed station at 32 miles, so time to fill up on flapjack, Jaffa cakes, bananas and energy drink.
From there it was time for a clockwise loop of 28 miles back to Meanstoke and this included the first big climb of the day up Butser Hill at 42 miles, back at Meanstoke at 60 miles, time to fill up again on marmite or ham sandwiches along with some sweets. From there headed north up towards New Alresford and this included the second big climb up Beacon Hill at 61 miles.
The third feed station came at 77 miles, so time to fill up on Jaffa cakes, sweets, energy gels and drink (later on I wish I had taken on water and not energy drink). At 90 miles I started to suffer, I think this was down too much energy drink plus the fact by this time the temperature had got up to 26.5 degrees, 4 miles later, 5 guys came past and I managed to jump on the back they pulled me back to the finish.

So after 101 miles and 5830 feet of climbing, I was back at the college and had completed with a Silver Award with a time of 6hr 12mins, my reward for finishing was a High5 bottle contain energy gels and bar plus an inner tube.
This event was a great event to ride, very well organised, route well signed posted and plenty of food at all the feed station.
