2025 Open TTs

Epsom CC 25 Mile - 28th September 2025

Two WECC riders took to the start line of the Epsom 25 Mile TT on the A31 course, near Bentley, on the morning of 28thSeptember 2025. Light winds but “fresh” temperatures just making double figures. Karl and Cheesy were pleased with their rides with Cheesy doing a season’s best time for 25 miles and a course PB by over a minute.

Karl was happy with his ride, his penultimate race of both 2025 and his racing career as he’s hanging up his racing shoes but his last Hurrah will be the SCA/WECC Hill Climb up the Steyning Bostal on Saturday 4th October 2025.

The event was won by Toby Tombs (Lea Vallet Youth) with a time of 50.05, knocking Cris Coxon into 2nd place for the first time in a very long while.

Icknield 10 Mile - 14th September 2025

After several weeks of warm weather,  it was a bit of a shock to be treated to a cool morning on the F11/10 course in Hertfordshire. A full field of 150 riders had entered, although 26 didn't start. The wind was light, and the rain held off until after the event, so conditions were quite good. I managed a new lifetime best of 20:36, which was good, as that was my last ever 10 mile TT.  The winner Matt Rositter of George Fox Cycling Solutions did an incredible time of 17:15, to win by over a minute ahead of Nicholas Trbovic Elysium Kalas Race team with 18.19.

VTTA 25 Mile - 14th September 2025

The VTTA 25 mile event was held on the G25/89 course on the A22 on Sunday 14th September 2025 but conditions were quite different to the ESCA event 4 weeks beforehand with temperatures in single figures. Cheesy was the only WECC rider who had entered and was a little jaded after an evening out with friends the night before but was keen to ride. Initially disappointed to go over the hour, when he returned to HQ it was apparent that everybody was slower due to the cold. Thankfully the forecast wind and heavy rain wasn’t in attendance. The event was won by John Rogers (Southborough & District Wheelers) with a time of 54.59 and the team prize was won by GS Stella.

Paceline RT 25 Mile - 7th September 2025

Three WECC riders took to the start line of the paceline 25 Mile TT on the fast A3 course on the morning of 7thSeptember 2025. Verity and Cheesy were pleased with their rides with Verity qualifying for and securing the club Ladies BBAR Title to her 2025 Palmares that already includes the ladies Evening 10 series and Ladies Vets Evening 10-mile series. To cap it all she was also the second fastest Lady in the Road bike category and won some prize money!!

Cheesy was just 40 seconds off his course PB and was pleased with his performance. Sadly, Karl had a navigational malfunction, confusing the southern turn with that of the 50-mile course, so went off course and was a DNF. Paceline won the team prize, and the event winner was Jamie Witcher (Bournemouth Cycleworks) with an inhuman time of 46.31 with an average speed of 32.25 Mph!

ESCA 25 Mile - 17th August 2025

Early on the morning of Sunday 17th August 2025 Cheesy and Verity travelled to the East of the county to ride the ESCA 25-mile TT event. Conditions were good with a reasonable temperature, dry conditions and light winds. The event started an hour later than billed which caused a few issues for the later starters with traffic building up on the single carriageway A22 causing some minor hold ups. Both Cheesy and Vez had some technical equipment issues with Verity’s power pedals not syncing and Cheesy’s Wahoo refusing to find a GPS signal so no speed or distance data!

Verity is very much in recovery mode so wasn’t pushing too hard as her injuries are still healing but she’s still targeting the WECC Ladies BBAR title for 2025. Cheesy was pleased with his ride and both secured course PB’s, Verity by virtue of not having ridden the course previously. The event was won by the “In Form” Cris Coxon with a time of 51.28 which is especially impressive as just before his start his rear valve core failed so he rode towards the front of the bike with a rear flat all the way round the course and I’m certain that he would have produced a sub 50 minute ride and become only the 4th rider to do so in its history.

Wales R25/3H - 10th August 2025

Race report from Karl Roberton
"On my return to racing in 2022, I was hoping to ride the fast R25/3H course in Wales, but due to extensive road works on the course it has been off the calendar for the last 5 years. So, I was delighted to see it back in this year. It was a long way to go for a 25, so I had booked a cottage nearby and travelled up on the Friday with Lyndsay, so we were able to have a weekend away from the children as well. A very picturesque course in a Welsh valley, with a fast start, but slightly up hill from the turn at 15miles.

I have been struggling since coming back from holiday on sone of my harder training sessions, so wasn't expecting a really quick time.  Conditions were good, with a warm morning and light winds, so I was pleased with my time of 52:51, which placed me 42st overall. The winner was Rob Francis of Team Bottrill on 44:54. Many riders got PBs, including myself as I knocked 48 seconds off, so we'll worth the trip."

Strada Wheels RT 10 Mile - 3rd August 2025

Early on the morning of Sunday 3rd August 2025 two WECC riders took to the start line of the Strada Wheels RT 10 Mile time trial. It was fresh with light winds but dry. A good field of riders had entered this annual event on what has been WECC’s “home” course. Cheesy and Ben rode well and were pleased with their rides albeit neither achieved a PB. The event was won by Chris McNamara (Sigma Sports) with a time of 19.05.

Horsham Cycling 25 Mile - 26th July 2025

Early on the morning of Saturday 26th July 2025 two WECC riders took to the start line of the Horsham CC 25 mile time trial. Cheesy and Verity were just a minute apart giving Cheesy a carrot to chase. Conditions were almost perfect with light winds, fair temperature and dry. Cheesy passed Verity about a mile before Patridge Green and was feeling good and finally finding some better form. This was short lived as when he got back to HQ he was advised that Vez had crashed and her bike was “destroyed”. After much phoning around he managed to determine that although enroute to hospital Vez was walking and talking. Sadly she had collided with a stationary car just as she’d entered Patridge Green so was a DNF but thankfully no serious injuries but some cuts, bruises and stiches. Typical of a TT warrior she was looking at how she can do two 25 mile TT’s to qualify for the Women’s BBAR. Fair play and we all wish her a speedy recovery. Ferenc File from Horsham won the event with an impressive 55.28.

Hounslow & District Wheelers 100 Mile - 25th May 2025

A new 100 mile club record 4.05.53 - taking 31 seconds out of Mike O'Gorman's record from 2017.
Race report from Karl below.

"My last 100-mile TT was in 2008, and with the intervening 17 years I had forgotten how hard they are trying to hold a TT position for four hours.  Training had been going well, so I was confident in getting a new PB and hopefully breaking four hours.  The event was held on the H100/88 course on the A31 in Hampshire, five laps of the same out and back loop but easy to follow.

Conditions on the morning were less than ideal. Although dry and sunny, there was a 15-17mph easterly breeze, which gusted up to 21mph during the morning.  The first leg was with the wind, I flew down to the first turn averaging 30mph, then struggled into the strong head wind on the return, only managing 23mph. On completing the first lap, there was a sudden realisation that there four more laps of this to go, so this was going to be a tough morning. The speed going into the wind was dropping each lap, which was frustrating,  but I could do little about it. I crossed the line in 4.05.53, to finish 17th overall. After finishing there was a couple of miles back to the car, once there I needed a few minutes before I could climb off the bike as my legs had completely seized up. It was not the most dignified dismount of a bike I have done post-race.

I was initially a little disappointed with the time, as I had hoped to have got under four hours. The overall winner Jake Sargent repeated his win from last year with a time of 3.33.28, which was 8 minutes slower this time, so on reflection, it was quite a good ride. I did take 16 minutes of my PB, and subject to confirmation from the club, should hopefully be the new Club 100-mile record.

I must thank my wife Lyndsay for her support that morning. Firstly, getting up at 04:30 to drive out to the event with me and then handling up gels and following me in the car with spare wheels etc during the race."

A3crg Nifty 50 Mile - 6 July 2025

Two WECC riders took to the start line of the A3crg 50 Mile TT on the A3 course in Hampshire. Warm and humid with light winds but wet roads following the rain overnight made for treasonable conditions. Both riders went reasonably well and were happy with their rides, albeit Karl would have been much happier not to have shipped his chain at 47 miles meaning a stop, dismount and remount which lost him about 30 to 45 seconds. Cheesy found that his bike was much quicker when the front brake wasn’t rubbing on the rim!!
The event was won by Paul Burton (Paceline RT) in an incredible time of 1.39.31.

Sussex Cyclists' Association 10 Mile - 10 May 2025

Early on the morning of Saturday 10th May 2025 just a solitary WECC rider took to the start line of the SCA 10 Mile time trial. Cheesy started early and it was a little chilly but winds were light. With only two races in his legs this season, Cheesy posted a “nothing to write home about” ride and there’s still some work to do to get to full race condition. The event was won by Cris Coxon (BMCC) with a time of 19.39 and, in an unusual turn of events, Simon McNamara finished third!

Brighton Mitre Hilly TT - 21 April 2025

Easter Monday 2025 saw just one WECC rider in open events, Brighton Mitre Hilly TT, being Cheesy’s second race in four days with a cheeky bit of Triahlon training on easter Sunday for good measure! Dry conditions with almost no wind but some mist on a very undulating course with what is effectively a hill climb after 27 miles.  Cheesy’s legs were feeling pretty good until about 25 Miles when the three last climbs arrived and it would appear that somebody had stolen them! Not a terrible result but over a minute slower than 2024 so clearly some work to do to regain full race fitness but good to get a few under the belt. The event was won by Simon McNamara in an astonishing time of 1.02.14 beating Pat Wright into second by nearly a minute. Also a shout out to Ali and co for shouting encouragement at Beeding (Well I think it was encouragement!)

Crawley Wheelers 41.60 Miles - 18 April 2025

Good Friday 2025 saw just one WECC rider in open events, the Crawley Wheelers Sporting TT (41.60 Miles). The weather was dry, chilly but sunny with light winds. Cheesy took to the start line in his first race of 2025 due to his fractured elbow in February so unsure of where he was in terms of form. The course had to be shortened to 35.2 miles due to temporary traffic lights at Lower Beeding. Cheesy was relatively pleased to get round in a respectable time, although his body and mind were less impressed assuming that he’d retired from racing!! The overall winner was Chris Coxen with an amazing time of 1.16.57, which was made even more impressive as he had a slow puncture since about 5 miles in to the race!

Charlotteville 25 - 13 April 2025

The Charlotteville 25 was held on the H25/8 course in Hampshire, the course is a loop and a half of the A31 between Holybourne and Farnham. After several weeks of dry weather, it was inevitable that we would get a wet race at some point, but thankfully it was only lightly raining and on the westerly side of the course. It did suppress the temperature a bit as well, but it was still reasonably pleasant riding. There was a limited field of 35 riders with 29 finishers and just myself (Karl Roberton) from the club. I finished with 56:23, which placed me 11th overall. The event was won by Jamie Whitcher (Bournemouth Cycleworks) with a time of 49:27, just ahead of Simon Mcnamara (Sigma Sports)on 50:08 and third was Tom Quinlan (FTP racing Team) on 53:07.
