4th May - 2004 100 Mile Challenge

I’ve been disappointed this past 2003 Season to see only two Worthing riders completing the ‘mens’ distance of 100 miles, and only one finishing a 12 hour. The fact that the Sussex C.A did not get enough entries to justify their running of a ‘12’ in 2003 was also disappointing, but I suppose it’s the way cycling is moving and in this very crowded corner with all its traffic problems; understandable.

However I titled this ‘A Challenge’ and it is an effort to get more rides from WECC members at 100 miles. There are quite a number who have done it and several more very capable of good performances. I list them ( and there may indeed be more) in no particular order:- Steve Trott (hope his 2003 injury is now OK), Tony Reeves, Peter Thorp-Hincks, Jeremy Wootton (he has promised a full season for 2004), Karl Roberton, Mel Roberton (Yes he’s going to give it a go before he gets too old), Toni Bond (only joined us in mid 2003, making an enthusiastic return to competitive cycling), Mark Hubbard and, as I managed it last year . . . . myself. Others who could . . . .. but this might stir them  . . . . . although I don’t think they will, are Chris Bacon, Mike Brampton and Chris White.

It would be really great if we were all to ride say the two local events, i.e the Sussex CA and the East Sussex CA. I intend to ride both and I will pay the entry fee of all WECC members who ride either or both of them, and beat me. Now from an OAP well past his sell by date . . . . . . come on let’s have a really good go. We could get the ESCA BAR if we also get a good entry in their 25 and 50 (they don’t include a 12) and as for the SCA, well they have two BAR tables, one which is 50 miles, 100 miles and includes ‘any 12’, and the other which is over the 3 distances of 25, 50 and 100. The SCA accept rides in either 100 and a number of other open 50’s run in Sussex.

If you ride a 100 I might even be prepared to help you in a ‘12’ . . . . . . . . if you want!

7th December - BAR Competition

Congratulations to Stephen Trott for finishing in 38th place in the national Senior Best All Rounder Competition for 2002. This is undoubtedly the highest position ever reached by a Worthing Excelsior rider. His three counting rides were: - 50 miles 1.59.09, 100 miles 4.13.07 and 12 hours 272.29 for an average mph of 23.858. The 12-hour distance was in fact the sixth best in the table. 105 riders beat 22 mph in the season long competition.

Old man Don Lock also made a BAR final table finishing 56th out of 239 in the Veteran's Three distance table. Times of: - 25 miles (1.2.21) 50m (2.11.10) and 100m (4.38.21) gave him a plus of 131 minutes and 14 seconds over his age standard. He says he promises to do better next year.
